Jordan Hiller, Recycling & Solid Waste Program Coordinator
Join us on site at 1419 Holland Rd in Appleton, WI for a very unique tour of the Outagamie County Recycling Facility. The full walking tour is equal to about .75 of a mile and covers many, multiple stair sets.
Attendees must wear closed toe shoes or won’t be allowed out on the floor. All other PPE will be provided (hardhat, safety glass, & safety vest). It’s ok to bring your own, if you’d like.
We’ll go over some basic instructions & talk about what we’re going to see on the floor before gearing up into our PPE. Headsets with microphones are used to allow attendees to listen & ask questions throughout the tour. We’ll make our way through the facility to the Tip floor where you’ll see recycling trucks unload. From there, material is picked up by a front-end loader & placed into the Metering Bin. This is how we calculate the volumes of material that enter the facility.
You’ll witness the entire recycling sorting process from unloading a recycling truck to material being bailed into shippable product. You’ll observe the pre-sort room, disc screen separators, the paper sort lines, polishing screens, container sort line, eddy current machine, optical sorter, residual discharge belt, and end at the bailers. Get an in-depth look at how 16% of Wisconsin's recycled materials are processed, sorted, and shipped back to market.
